Yeonmi Park: Her Real Life Story Resembles a Hollywood Movie

Yeonmi Park is one of the most famous human rights activists in the world. This young lady frequently speaks out against the atrocities that happen in North Korea. Park’s Amazon released book tells about her defection from North Korea is similar to a Hollywood movie. It is loaded with danger, expense, drama and lots of twists and turns.
Her story begins in the city of Hyesan which is located within the Ryanggang Province inside of North Korea. When Park was born in the early 90s she grew up in a educated and politically involved family. This all changed a few years later when North Korea collapsed within a short time period after Yeonmi was born.

Yeonmi’s father spoke out against the government which was then headed by Kim Jong-il. Soon he turned to smuggling to support his starving family. Soon afterward he was imprisoned. While Park’s father was in jail he realized that he had to get his family out of North Korea. Since he knew other smugglers; it was not going to be that difficult for him to accomplish.

Yeonmi’s father was released sometime during mid 2000’s and by 2007 he was ready to take his family out of North Korea. Right before the family was ready to leave, Yeonmi’s sister, Eunmi, had disappeared. The family did not know where she was at. So, they had to start the journey without her.

Yeonmi’s father had decided to send Yeonmi and her mother on ahead of him. He would then join his wife and daughter at a later date. Yeonmi and her mom began the long trek to freedom on their own. The journey was difficult and full of danger. The ladies survived and were eventually joined by Yeonmi’s father. He died from untreated cancer shortly after arriving. That’s when the real horrors began.

Yeonmi and her mother suffered all sorts of horrible things during their journey to freedom. They had to evade all kind of enemies that were looking to send them back home and stay out of the clutches of evil smuggler with bad intentions. The ladies eventually made it to South Korea and to freedom. Yeonmi (and her mom) eventually found her sister in South Korea.

The family had undergone many horrors, lost their father and endured a lot of problems. Regardless of what they went through, they made it to a new life. You can find out more about this real life story that resembles a Hollywood movie on Reason.com and NY Times.
