Her story begins in the city of Hyesan which is located within the Ryanggang Province inside of North Korea. When Park was born in the early 90s she grew up in a educated and politically involved family. This all changed a few years later when North Korea collapsed within a short time period after Yeonmi was born.
Yeonmi’s father spoke out against the government which was then headed by Kim Jong-il. Soon he turned to smuggling to support his starving family. Soon afterward he was imprisoned. While Park’s father was in jail he realized that he had to get his family out of North Korea. Since he knew other smugglers; it was not going to be that difficult for him to accomplish.
Yeonmi’s father was released sometime during mid 2000’s and by 2007 he was ready to take his family out of North Korea. Right before the family was ready to leave, Yeonmi’s sister, Eunmi, had disappeared. The family did not know where she was at. So, they had to start the journey without her.
Yeonmi’s father had decided to send Yeonmi and her mother on ahead of him. He would then join his wife and daughter at a later date. Yeonmi and her mom began the long trek to freedom on their own. The journey was difficult and full of danger. The ladies survived and were eventually joined by Yeonmi’s father. He died from untreated cancer shortly after arriving. That’s when the real horrors began.
